Discover the Lemosho Route on Mount Kilimanjaro

The Lemosho Route is known for its scenic approach from the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. The journey begins in montane rainforest before opening into heathland and moorland, with wide views across the Shira Plateau as the trail moves towards the higher slopes of the mountain.

One of the route’s attractions is the variety of landscapes encountered during the climb. The lower rainforest feels sheltered and rich in vegetation, while the upper mountain becomes more open, rocky and exposed. As the altitude increases, the scenery changes and the demands of trekking become more noticeable.

A seven-day Lemosho itinerary offers a relatively compact schedule for reaching the summit. It requires good preparation and should be assessed carefully in relation to your fitness, previous trekking experience and response to altitude. A longer itinerary may provide more time for acclimatisation and can be worth considering when planning your climb.

Girls Adventure Tanzania can help you discuss the route, your preferred travel dates and the arrangements needed for your expedition. Before booking, make sure you understand the daily trekking plan, accommodation, inclusions and safety procedures.

Why Choose Lemosho?

A Scenic Route With a Remarkable Range of Landscapes

The Lemosho experience combines mountain scenery, changing ecological zones and the challenge of a high-altitude summit attempt. These are some of the features that make the route distinctive.

01 / LANDSCAPE

Begin in the Mountain Rainforest

The lower trail passes through montane rainforest, where tall trees, dense vegetation and a cooler atmosphere create a memorable introduction to the mountain. The forest section provides a contrast to the exposed terrain encountered at higher elevations.

02 / SCENERY

Explore the Shira Plateau

As the trail climbs beyond the forest, the landscape opens into heathland and moorland. The Shira Plateau offers expansive views and a different perspective on Kilimanjaro’s volcanic terrain, with the summit region rising in the distance when conditions allow.

03 / EXPEDITION

Work Towards Uhuru Peak

The summit attempt is the defining challenge of the expedition. Reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres requires determination, careful pacing and respect for altitude. Summit success cannot be guaranteed, and the guide team must prioritise the health and safety of the climbers.

Important planning note: Seven days on the Lemosho Route is a challenging option because the schedule allows less time for acclimatisation than longer variations. The exact camp sequence and daily walking plan should be confirmed with Girls Adventure Tanzania before booking. If you prefer a more gradual schedule, ask about the eight-day Lemosho Route.

Girls Adventure Tanzania · Day-by-Day Guide

Your 7-Day Lemosho
Route Itinerary

Follow the journey from the lush western slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro to the high-altitude landscapes near the summit. Each day brings a different environment, from rainforest trails and open moorland to the dramatic alpine terrain above the clouds.

Day 01

Londorossi Gate to Forest Camp

Your mountain adventure begins with the journey to the western side of Kilimanjaro. After registration at Londorossi Gate and the necessary park formalities, you begin trekking through the lush rainforest.

The forest is rich in vegetation and birdlife, and the trail can be damp or muddy depending on the weather. Walk at a comfortable pace, follow your guide, and take time to adjust to the mountain environment.

Day 02

Forest Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Leave much of the dense forest behind as the path climbs toward the Shira Plateau. The vegetation gradually changes, opening up the landscape and revealing broader views of the surrounding mountain terrain when conditions are clear.

The ascent may feel more demanding as the elevation increases. Maintain a slow, consistent rhythm, drink water regularly, and tell your guide if you notice symptoms such as a persistent headache, nausea, dizziness, or unusual weakness.

Day 03

Shira Plateau to Moir Hut Area

Continue across the Shira landscape, where wide skies, volcanic terrain and distinctive high-altitude plants create a striking contrast with the rainforest below. The trail offers time to appreciate the scale of Kilimanjaro while continuing the gradual journey toward higher ground.

Your guide will set the pace according to the group and the conditions. Keep warm during breaks, eat regularly, and avoid rushing simply because the trail appears open or manageable.

Day 04

Moir Hut Area via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

This is an important high-altitude trekking day. The route climbs toward the Lava Tower area before descending toward Barranco Camp. This profile allows trekkers to experience a higher elevation before sleeping lower, a principle often described as “climb high, sleep low.”

Conditions can become colder and more exposed as you gain altitude. Follow your guide’s instructions, keep your waterproof and warm layers accessible, and report any signs of altitude illness immediately.

Mountain safety: Reaching a high point does not guarantee that everyone will feel well. The guide team should assess each trekker’s condition and adjust the plan when necessary.
Day 05

Barranco Camp to Barafu Base Camp

Begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall. The trail requires careful footing and attention to your guide’s instructions, but it is a memorable part of the Lemosho experience.

Continue toward the Karanga area, where you take a hot lunch or a packed lunch according to the arrangements for your climb. After the break, continue toward Barafu Base Camp. On this itinerary, you do not spend the night at Karanga Camp.

At Barafu, rest, hydrate, organise your summit equipment and listen carefully to the guide’s briefing. An early rest period is important because the summit attempt begins during the night.

Summit preparation: Keep your warm layers, headlamp, gloves, water and essential summit items ready before resting. Your guide will confirm the departure time and final safety instructions.
Day 06

Barafu Base Camp to Uhuru Peak, Then Mweka Camp

The summit attempt usually starts around midnight or during the early hours, depending on the guide team’s plan and conditions. Move slowly through the darkness, taking regular breaks as directed by your guides.

The route continues toward Stella Point and, if conditions and your physical condition allow, onward to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres—the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit is a remarkable achievement, but safety always takes priority.

After the summit attempt, descend carefully toward Barafu and continue to Mweka Camp. The descent is long and can be tiring, so use your trekking poles if you have them and stay attentive to your footing.

Important: Summit success cannot be guaranteed. Guides may turn a trekker around if symptoms, weather or other safety concerns make continuing inadvisable.
Day 07

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

After breakfast, begin the final descent through the forest. The trail can be slippery after rain, so take your time and follow your guide’s advice, especially on steeper sections.

At Mweka Gate, complete the required park formalities. Your trekking team will help coordinate the next arrangements according to your booking, such as transfer to your hotel. Take a moment to celebrate the effort, teamwork and experience of your Kilimanjaro journey.

Prepare for the Mountain

Three Priorities Before Summit Night

The summit attempt demands patience, preparation and honest communication with your guide team. These simple priorities can help you approach the night more confidently.

01. Organise Your Layers

Prepare thermal layers, an insulated jacket, waterproof protection, warm gloves, a hat and a headlamp. Conditions can be very cold and windy near the summit.

02. Eat, Drink and Rest

Follow your crew’s meal and hydration guidance. Rest whenever possible before departure and tell your guide if you feel unwell or unusually exhausted.

03. Follow Your Guides

Walk slowly, keep the group informed about how you feel and follow instructions during the ascent and descent. Safety comes before reaching a particular point.

Know What to Expect on Your
Lemosho Route Adventure

A successful Kilimanjaro expedition begins with good preparation. Understand the practical arrangements, mountain safety principles and acclimatization challenges before starting your seven-day journey to the roof of Africa.

Your Expedition Arrangements

What to Confirm Before Your Climb

Every booking should clearly explain which services are included. Review these arrangements with Girls Adventure Tanzania before confirming your trek, so you know what to prepare and budget for.

Kilimanjaro mountain guide preparing for a trekking expedition

01. Park and Route Arrangements

Confirm how park entry fees, camping fees, required permits and other applicable park charges are handled in your package.

Ask for a clear explanation of the route, camp sequence and the services arranged for each trekking day.

02. Mountain Crew and Guidance

Confirm the guiding arrangements, supporting mountain crew and the emergency procedures used during the expedition.

Ask how the team communicates with trekkers, checks their condition and responds when the itinerary needs to change.

03. Meals, Water and Camping

Check which meals are provided, how drinking water is treated and supplied, and what camping equipment is included.

For this seven-day itinerary, confirm the Day 5 lunch arrangement in the Karanga area before continuing to Barafu Base Camp.

04. Transfers and Accommodation

Confirm whether airport transfers, transport to the mountain gate and hotel accommodation before or after the climb are included in your specific quotation.

Do not assume these services are included unless they are listed in your booking confirmation.

Budget and Planning

What May Need a Separate Budget?

Package details differ between operators and bookings. Check the written inclusions and exclusions instead of assuming that every travel expense is covered.

Travel and Personal Expenses

  • International flights and applicable travel costs.
  • Visa fees and personal travel documentation.
  • Travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation.
  • Personal trekking clothing, boots and other equipment not supplied by the operator.
  • Personal snacks, drinks or purchases outside the agreed package.

Optional or Booking-Dependent Costs

  • Hotel nights before or after the trek, if not included.
  • Equipment rental and additional services not listed in the quotation.
  • Tips for guides, porters and other mountain crew, according to your preference and local guidance.
  • Personal medical consultations or medicines.
  • Any additional transport or itinerary changes outside the confirmed arrangements.
Before you book: Request a written quotation that clearly lists inclusions, exclusions, payment terms, cancellation conditions and the arrangements for emergencies or itinerary changes.

Altitude Awareness

Understanding Acclimatization

As you climb higher, the amount of available oxygen with each breath decreases. Your body needs time to adjust, and trekkers can respond differently to the same altitude.

The seven-day Lemosho itinerary is demanding. Its shorter schedule gives less time for acclimatization than longer itineraries, so discuss the route’s demands honestly before deciding whether it suits your experience and fitness.

  • Walk slowly and avoid unnecessary rushing.
  • Drink fluids regularly and eat according to your guide’s advice.
  • Tell your guide promptly about headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue.
  • Follow the team’s altitude monitoring and safety instructions.
  • Be prepared to stop ascending or descend if your condition requires it.
Important: Fitness alone does not prevent altitude illness. Medication such as acetazolamide (Diamox) should only be considered with advice from a qualified healthcare professional. Never hide symptoms to continue toward the summit.

Safety Comes First

Mountain Safety on the Lemosho Route

Weather, altitude, fatigue and trail conditions can change during a Kilimanjaro climb. Preparation and communication help the team make safer decisions throughout the journey.

Listen to Your Guide

Follow instructions on steep sections, narrow trails and exposed terrain. The Barranco Wall requires careful footing and attention to the route.

Prepare for Changing Weather

Carry suitable waterproof clothing and warm layers. Conditions may be very different between the forest, high camps and summit area.

Report Symptoms Early

Do not dismiss worsening headache, repeated vomiting, difficulty walking, confusion or breathing problems at rest. These can signal serious altitude illness and need urgent assessment and action.

Respect the Summit Decision

The summit is a goal, not a guarantee. Weather, altitude symptoms and physical condition may require a change of plan. A safe descent is always more important than reaching the top.

Emergency warning: Severe breathing difficulty at rest, confusion, loss of coordination or rapidly worsening symptoms require immediate attention from the mountain team and urgent descent or evacuation according to the emergency plan.

Before Departure

Your Pre-Climb Preparation Checklist
